![]() ![]() In this chapter we’ll learn about the different ways that human languages can build words, as well as about the structure that can be found inside words. We also know what combinations of pieces are not possible. One of the things we know when we know a language is how to create new words out of existing pieces, and how to understand new words that other people use as long as the new words are made of pieces we’ve encountered before. To go back to the simple example of cat and -s, in English we can’t put those two pieces in the opposite order and still get the same meeting- scat is a word in English, but it doesn’t mean “more than one cat”, and it doesn’t have the pieces cat and -s in it, instead it’s an entirely different word. Not all combinations of pieces are possible, however. In many languages, however, words are often made up of many parts, and a single word can express a meaning that would require a whole sentence in English.įor example, in the Harvaqtuurmiutut variety of Inuktitut, the word iglujjualiulauqtuq has 5 pieces, and expresses a meaning that could be translated by the full English sentence “They (sg) made a big house.” ( iglu = house, – jjua = big, – liu = make, – lauq = distant past, – tuq = declarative this example is from a 2010 paper by Compton and Pittman). Most words in English have only one or two pieces in them, but some technical words can have many more, like non-renewability, which has at least five ( non-, re-, new, -abil, and -ity). For example, the word cats is put together from two parts: cat, which refers to a particular type of furry four-legged animal (□), and -s, which indicates that there’s more than one such animal (□ □⬛ □). smoke+fog=smog Example of word formation processes in Morphology. In linguistics, morphology is the study of how words are put together. Eponyms are created from names or any proper nouns, and blending is combining different parts of different words to make a one word e.g. Acronyms are derived from the initials of words or phrase e.g. ice-cream back-formations are created from removing what is mistakenly considered to be an affix, abbreviations or clippings are shortening of longer words into a shot word e.g. Compounds are a combination of two of more words e.g. There are many ways to form new words such as coinage, compounding, blending, borrowing, abbreviation, back-formation, and eponym. Free morphemes can stand alone as a meaningful unit while bound morphemes cannot stand alone as a meaningful unit but they must occur with another morpheme to produce meaning.Īn example of a free morpheme is “quick”, and an example of a bound morpheme is “ly.” Free morpheme ‘quick’ has meaning but bound morpheme ‘ly’ has no meaning as a single unit, but when it occurs with another morpheme like quick+ly it become meaningful. There are two types of morpheme : free morpheme and bound morpheme. Morphemes are the minimal units of words that cannot be subdivided further. ![]() ![]() How new words are formed? What is their relationship to other words in the same language? Morphology analyses the internal structure of words and morphemes, such as stems, root words, and affixes. Morphology, in linguistics, is the study of words construction. ![]() ![]() ![]() Ever wanted to produce an instant print of a phone selfie, or a shot you took on a "proper camera"? Now you can! It's like an Instax Mini that enables you to edit your photos before you print them – and it also enables you to turn images from your phone into real Instax photos. This is my favorite hybrid digital instant camera, outclassing the Instax Mini LiPlay. Read our full Fujifilm Instax Square SQ1 review for more details Digital instant cameras So the Polaroid Now+ trumps it if you want advanced and creative tools, but the Instax takes it for conventional image quality. The SQ1 takes pristine photographs whether you're indoors or outdoors, though it lacks many of the features from the discontinued Instax Square SQ6 (such as a self-timer, tripod mount, and double exposures). But Instax Square prints are technically 'better' – sharper, with higher contrast and flatter, more authentic colors. Personally I prefer the Polaroid look for square prints it just looks more authentically vintage, with dreamy colors and softness, thanks to Polaroid's mirror and photochemical process. As you might expect the camera uses Instax Square film, with a size and shape reminiscent of traditional Polaroid prints. The Instax Square SQ1 is powered by two small CR2 lithium batteries (included) that the manufacturer claims will last a whopping 300 shots (30 packs of film). Read our full Polaroid Go review for more details And if you've got kids, this could be the ideal camera for little hands to get started with. And the Go boasts double exposures, which you won't get unless you opt for pricier options like the Instax Mini 90 Neo Classic (below).Ī fun and funky little camera, the Polaroid Go will be the star of your next party and will deposit an endless amount of memories in your pocket or wallet. Instax Mini film does work out cheaper than Polaroid Go film, but then you'll also need to replace AA batteries on a Mini whereas the Go just needs a USB connection to top up the power. Neither are as joyous to use, though, nor will they make you as many friends as the Go – which still takes very pleasing pics. In terms of quality, the Polaroid Now cameras balance exposures better while rival Instax Mini cameras deliver slightly better image quality indoors. It's the world's smallest analog instant camera, and it produces fittingly tiny instant photos, too. I fell in love with this palm-sized camera faster than it took a photo to develop – and so does everyone I show it to. ![]() ![]() ![]() For example, some typo… View full list Cryptography is the cornerstone of Java's security features in general. ![]() ![]() Then you buy whatever skills you want and go for the Collectible Trophies. At this point you can still free roam around the entire map to do things you’ve missed. You should reload this save after the story, after unlocking “No Needles”. Remember to make a manual save during main mission “Before I Give You The Key”. As long as the stats on your main save say that you haven’t used Neuromods and haven’t killed humans you are good to go. I want to point out again that you are absolutely allowed to do skill & kill-related trophies along the way if you reload the save game afterwards. They can be thrown at obstacles to make them disappear (would otherwise require the Leverage skill). Always keep some Recycler Charges with you. Don’t waste your Gloo Gun on enemies, keep it for when you need to create climbing paths. ![]() The Gloo Gun is your best friend, you can build “stairs” with it on walls or climbable structures in elevator shafts. You won’t be able to hack doors and must find other ways around. Make sure you choose easy difficulty as the game is very challenging without the use of skills. The trophies should pop at roughly 65 TranScribes / 265 Crew Members / 150-190 Emails (slightly varies for every player). The trophies will pop early before finding everything. Afterwards, reload this save, buy skills (especially Hacking, Leverage, Mimic Matter) and get the following Collectibles: Emails, TranScribes, Missing Persons, Smuggler’s Dead Drops, Starbender Books, Messages You Left for Yourself. There are tons of collectibles but here’s the good news: You don’t truly need all collectibles. For now complete the story to earn No Needles, No Harm, I and Thou. At this point you can still go back to all areas to get missing collectibles (time to look at collectible guides). Make a manual save in main mission “Before I Give You The Key” (endgame). No need to follow a collectible guide just yet. Check every PC for Emails, loot every Corpse and explore carefully. Collectibles: Pick up all Collectibles along the way that you come across.By doing all side quests you not only get many individual trophies, but it also helps with “I and Thou”. Others are triggered by listening to the TranScribes (Collectibles) of dead crew members. Most side quests pop up automatically during main missions. Side Quests: The side quests are tied to a lot of trophies.Even if you get a negative point you can compensate for it by doing another good deed. ![]() Just do all side quests you come across and rescue everyone possible. Refusing to help people or letting them die gives you negative psychopath points which should be avoided. Basically, this works on a point system and you must end the game with +4 empathy points. See “I and Thou” trophy for an overview of what actions affect your empathy. I and Thou: Requires you to finish the game in the most empathetic way. Also avoid using Recycler charges near humans as it could kill them. You should, of course, help everyone and do all side quests as they are tied to many other trophies. For example if you do not get Mikhaila her medicine she will die but you didn’t shoot her dead, so the game doesn’t treat it as a death caused by you (just a failed side quest). Refusing to save someone doesn’t count as a kill. Simply reload your save game after killing them and you’ll still earn the Do No Harm trophy at the end. This includes the cook in Crew Quarters and Alex. There are certain trophies that require you to do the exact opposite and kill a specific NPC. You can also use the Disruptor Stun Gun to stun humans instead of killing them. They will run towards you and have their heads explode – this is perfectly acceptable and does not void the trophy! If they die from attacks of other enemies or from environmental damage it does not count as a kill either. It’s okay if mind-controlled people kill themselves. Do No Harm: Never kill any humans! This means allies (quest givers, security officers) and mind-controlled humans. It will still earn you No Needles in the end! This way you can also knock out the combat and skill-related trophies along the way. It’s okay to make a manual save, buy Neuromods to do a quick combat-related trophy, then reload the manual save. This will earn you the “No Needles” trophy at the end of the game. No Needles: Do not install any Neuromods on your main save (meaning you can’t buy skills). ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I used regular unsweetened, but a dark or dutch processed one would be fine too. I baked my batter in a 10″ square pan, cut the cake in half, and stacked the two layers on top of one another to form a 10×5″ 2-layer cake. I’ll keep it short (and sweet!) today, but I do want to fill you in on a few recipe details. Chocolate and vanilla is always a safe choice, and let’s be honest- we could all use a little of that, right? ![]() Maybe you have a fussy eater in your house who doesn’t love fancy flavors? They’ll adore this! Maybe you’re normally an adventurous eater but you’re really just craving something that feels comforting and familiar? Again, this marble layer cake is the perfect choice. I think a cake like this is a fun twist on a traditional chocolate or vanilla cake and makes a great alternative for the plain Janes in your life. I was always obsessed with their marble loaf and even shared a copycat recipe on this site a few years ago. My first experience with marble anything was at a Starbucks. This is the dessert you go when you’re craving both chocolate and vanilla, and because it’s a slightly smaller batch recipe than I normally share here, you can feel okay about making it during these more isolated times. Can we just agree that things are kinda tumultuous? The political, health, financial, and relational climate of this world is a hodgepodge right now, so it seemed fitting to share a dessert equally nutso: Marble Layer Cake. Thomas Moran alongside the fence of his East Hampton home and studio. Here was a place in which he could live, breathe, socialize and interact with other artists -while painting a wide array of landscapes and seascapes. “I think he quickly realized the kind of life he could live there.” ![]() Anderson, chief curator of American and British art at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. “I think he found a place that really spoke to him and Mary,” says Nancy K. “East Hampton so resembled a peaceful English village that it won Thomas’ heart at once, and filled him with nostalgia,” wrote biographer Thurman Wilkins. For Thomas, who was born in Lancashire, England, it all seemed familiar. The Morans marveled at what they found: They were awed by the elms, chestnut and maple trees that shaded Main Street charmed by the flocks of geese and cows that roamed the lanes around the village and dazzled by the sun-dappled fields. Ruth recalled the “sweet smell of fields, of growing things with the salt downy fog dripping from the blackness that was East Hampton’s night.” The Morans’ daughter, Ruth, later recalled the last leg of the journey, from the rail terminus at Bridgehampton in a stagecoach - “Seven sandy, woodsy miles in a knife-box stage, smelling of leather and hay” - and her initial impressions of the village, in which they arrived at dusk. It consisted of a single grassy street, around which were clustered a number of old saltbox houses. A PLACE TO LIVE AND PAINTįounded two centuries earlier, the village of East Hampton had a population of roughly 600 at the time of the Morans’ arrival. In the summer of 1879, Moran and his wife, Scottish-born illustrator Mary Nimmo Moran, rented rooms in a local boarding house and began to explore the pastoral beauty and oceanic majesty of the Hamptons. Thanks to the enthusiastic reports of The Tile Club, however, the painter of the West was now turning his gaze East. ![]() Some of these images - including his seven-foot-high, 12-foot-long masterpiece, “Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone” - were purchased by the federal government and provided the impetus for legislation that would eventually produce the National Park System. Moran’s paintings of Yellowstone, the Grand Tetons and other now-familiar Western landmarks were also viewed by members of Congress and President Ulysses S. Thomas Moran's "Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone." The magazine thought a first-hand report on this place by the intrepid Tile Clubbers would prove entertaining.īy clicking Sign up, you agree to our privacy policy. ![]() A handful of artists and writers had started visiting the area in the years before the Civil War and word was filtering back about its many charms. The group of 11 shared something in common: They were New York City-based painters and illustrators with a common interest in decorative arts - pottery, glass, textiles. They had come from New York City to visit the sleepy, rural outpost of East Hampton because they’d heard about its powerful natural attractions. On a spring day in 1878, a group of men clad in fashionable London walking boots and carrying sketch pads, easels and cases filled with paints and brushes ambled off a train at Bridgehampton, then the easternmost stop on the Long Island Rail Road. ![]() ![]() ![]() Sophia eventually was taken seriously, with a well-deserved Oscar for her shattering performance in “Two Women.” But even though she rightfully earned respect as an actress, we’re still salivating over her equipment as a movie star. It’s only natural to want to look beautiful. ![]() Hollywood eventually noticed (how could you miss them?) and her initial English-language roles placed greater emphasis on anatomy rather than acting (the wet dress photos from “Boy on a Dolphin” can still inspire gasps). Sexy slave girls in ancient costume dramas were her initial specialty, with an emphasis on skimpy costumes ( “Two Nights with Cleopatra” and “Aida” come to our dirty minds). Sporting a jaw-dropping set of 38Cs, Sophia Loren first gained notice in the Rome movie industry with roles that showed off her, uh, talent. No wonder Jack Paar presented her on his talk show with the classic quip: “And here they are, Jayne Mansfield.” Today she possesses a superstar aura and her name alone conjures up images of Coleridge-worthy pleasure domes. But Jayne’s astonishing 40D frontline and her penchant for camp self-deprecatory humor made her a beloved icon in her own right. Okay, so she was a Marilyn Monroe clone and the bulk of her film work was dreck. But Jayne is easily the ultimate movie mammary mama. How the censors ever allowed the sight gag with Jayne Mansfield clutching the milk bottles to her chest in “The Girl Can’t Help It” is the ultimate mystery. JAYNE MANSFIELD: BRING ON THE HOME-GROWN COW JUICE While everyone knows “Carmen Jones” and her low-cut blouse, check out Dandridge shaking her stuff in the limbo dance from “Island in the Sun.” And how we envy the audiences who attended Dandridge’s classic 1950s nightclub revue, with the star holding up her legendary strapless gowns with a forceful display of anatomy. Breast buffs also recall Dandridge – for her firm, supple, utterly hypnotic orbs. Trivia buffs recall that Dorothy Dandridge was the first African-American performer to receive a Best Actress Oscar nomination. When asked if she had anything on during that legendary shoot, MM replied: “Yes, I had the radio on.” Needless to say, we’re still tuned in to her frequency. While her tight costumes showed off her figure brilliantly, we still find ourselves sneaking a peek at the notorious nude calendar photos she posed for in her pre-stardom period. Kaufman referred to the Russell promotion as “A Sale of Two Titties,” and all of Russell’s flicks included some sort of bosomy double-entendre (our favorite was for “The French Line”: Jane Russell in 3-D… she’ll knock both of your eyes out!”).Įven at this late date, Marilyn Monroe represents the pinnacle of movie star perfection. Hughes’ wildly expensive and lethally overheated PR campaign for Russell’s debut vehicle “The Outlaw” created long-running censorship wars because the marketing campaign played up Russell’s cleavage with too much gusto. Thanks to Howard Hughes’ infantile preoccupation with bosoms, Jane Russell became a star. An inflatable life vest that created oversized flotation power was named the Mae West in honor of the star’s celebrated upper torso. Plenty of men wanted to come up and see her sometime, but Mae’s upper echelons actually helped saved lives in World War II. The woman who brought curves to the screen was Mae West, the taboo-breaking Brooklyn-born 1930s wisecracker who plied laughs while shaking her astonishing anatomy. ![]() ![]() Of course, WinRAR can be used to compress files into many other compressed formats, and the program benefits from the fact that it is available for just about every platform imaginable.
